Health Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia (HIRS), which is a constituent body of the Ministry of Health, is responsible for the fields of operation which are laid down in the 16 th article of the Decree on constituent bodies of the ministries. Competencies and tasks of health inspection as activity carried out by HIRS are laid down in Act regulating inspection supervision and Health inspection act.

HIRS is an enforcement body which monitors the implementation of laws and other regulations governing the fields of communicable diseases, wholesomeness and safety of food, drinking water, mineral waters, food contact articles and materials, restriction of alcohol consumption, cosmetic products, toys, tobacco, tobacco products, bathing waters, health and hygiene safety in the filed of health care, child care, schooling, education, hygiene care, social care and general product safety within the competencies of the Ministry of Health exclusive of chemicals, medicinal products and sources of radiation.

In the field of food safety Health Inspectorate operates also as National contact point within the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) which enables rapid communication and performance of measures needed to be taken by competent authorities in this field."
